Help With Care

My 90 year old mother has been assessed and it would seem despite suffering from Alzheimer’s she is not eligible to be considered for a care home. They feel that with more aids she can continue to live in her flat. This is the same flat that she cannot close and lock the door for - I found the key in the rubbish bin and on more than one occasion I have returned to find the door unlocked and ajar - they suggested we fit buzzers to the door (it already has them attached to the alarm that she cannot work). Anyway the noise would just confuse her if she could hear it at all She is also too frail to lift the handle up to close the door properly
I really don’t know who to turn to now. I’m convinced the social workers are only interested in their budgets

Have you had a serious conversation with her GP since the decision was made?

The thing is I’m quite prepared to pay for her if I can be sure she will receive funding when her savings ger below the £24k threshold (or what ever it is)

sorry...I don't understand....its her savings but you will pay for her? And if she has savings, why is social services involved....have you got a POA?

Ohh .... I assumed there was no private money available, but I think see what you mean. You want a guarantee from Social Services that they will fund her care when the money has gone - but they don't think she needs to be in a home - which would create a dilemma once the money has run out. Is that right?

Yes that correct Naomi - I do have POA. Basically she has no savings but owns her own flat - that I live in
She is in the one underneath as she can’t manage the stairs
Obviously I will have to buy it from her

Ric.ror, that’s a really difficult one. Basically, you can decide to find a home for her now and pay for it, but because Social Services don’t consider she needs to be in a care home, we have to assume that once your funds are exhausted they won’t pay for her to stay there and therefore she will have to leave. Your only option seems to be to hope that once your money runs out, Social Services will re-assess her and reach a sensible decision, but of course that can't be guaranteed. For the moment I can only suggest you contact the Alzheimer's Society and go from there. They’re very helpful. I wish you and your mother the very best. Awful situation to be in.

Ric.... ask for one named dedicated social worker then speak to her GP. If your mother has any medical or nursing needs try to have that the reason she has to go into care if possible.
If she is admitted as a dementia sufferer she won’t be considered as ill despite it being a bloody awful condition and she will have to pay all then some of her fees til she has £14K left. X

Honestly the situation is farcical
She is now hearing voices - singing to be honest
But still they think she can live on her own. I honestly think they are waiting until something bad happens. I feel like putting her in a care home and when the money runs out just leaving her there
