Council Housing
29 Answers
Over the years Ive noticed a lot of derogatory comments on here...and elsewhere to be fair...about council house tenants. (sink estates etc)
As a council tenant, I feel myself to be extremely privileged. The majority of council house tenants that I know feel the same. Yes, we all know some go against the grain. Theres a private estate near me thats ALWAYS mentioned in the local rag for its pedos, thieves, pub fights etc. but somehow its always council house tenants that get the flack.
WHY?

She bought it for £38,000 under the right to buy scheme. It's now worth upward of £400,000. When she dies, my friend who has three other properties will inherit it. All of that money will go into his pocket but the tax payers of the borough paid for that property. I think that is wrong.

Your friends mother probably paid for that property 10 times over, whilst the council was empire building at her expense, and sorting out pensions and money for nothing for the boys. Rather he has the money than Khan and his cohorts. By the way "councils" did not fund the council house building push after WW2. That was a government initiative............whilst at the same time rebuilding Germany, and trying to pay the US for the shells and aeroplanes they fired or lost "on our behalf".

Your friends mother probably hadn't paid for that property 10 times over since the rent would inevitably have been less than the mortgage would be, so she would have been in reverse gear all that time. Possibly didn't cover the interest for duch a mortgage let alone the capital.
Government provided accomodation is to provide a home for those unfortunate enough not to be able to afford one at market prices. It's a public duty to our citizens. By definition they won't be able to buy it once let alone many times.

I worked in the public sector, after my divorce I had to live in private rented with my next partner, fine with two incomes but when we split I needed a place I could afford that offered security, I also needed a place where there was a safety net if my mental health deteriorated. I was offered sheltered housing and while I hated the thought of admitting I had failed after years of being self supporting it was the best thing I could have done. I feel safe here, I might be one of the youngest residents but people here are friendly, many were born and brought up in the area, and take a great deal of pride in the block. Those who don't behave in an appropriate manner e.g. making noise, and using illegal substances don't stay long as the council uses its powers to move or evict them. Had my life turned out as I originally intended then at this stage in my life I would be living in my own home with a larger pension.
