Flying From Amsterdam Via London

I want to fly long distance from London with BA. Their fares are typically quite expensive from LHR Non-stop to the destination.

I have seen flights with BA from Amsterdam connecting in London (same non-stop flight) which are about £300 cheaper. Plus of course I'll have my fare from UK to Amsterdam (Easyjet maybe).

Outward bound changeover is within Heathrow.

Return requires a switch from LHR to LCY or LGW for onward flight to Amsterdam..

Does anyone know whether hold baggage needs to be collected at LHR and checked in again at LCY or LGW. Or will it be checked in at overseas airport all the way through to AMS?

Almost certain that you will need to collect your bags and make the transfers yourself, but the nest way to get a definitive answer would be to contact BA.

Incidentally, LCY is a great airport. However, not brilliantly easy to get to from LHR.

There are a couple of shuttle bus services that run between LHR and LGW.

once Crossrail's up and running, allegedly later this year, you can get from Heathrow to somewhere close to LCY - though LCY wasn't given a stop itself because the mayor blocked it, as he was trying to promote a new airport down river.

I would check with BA what will happen to the bags. Presumably if they do need to be collected it will be much easier for you - no need to go all the way to Amsterdam (and back).

BA specifically says bags will not be transferred where the flight connection is between different airports in London:

Have you checked other UK airports, Manchester for example? We priced flights to the USA from London to be around £700, from Manchester to the same destination, same airline, it was £640, the irony being that we would have flown Man-LHR then joined the same flight for which they wanted £700, to do with airport charges, LHR is always expensive.
How much is BA to Amsterdam? If you're booked on the same carrier, or code share carrier, then your bags can be checked right through.

What's your local little airport? You can often book a return from your local airport, via AMS, for less than going through LHR, we go via Norwich to the States flying with KLM and Delta, bags straight through.

Something else you might like to consider – when you buy tickets for your flights from start to end in one transaction – then the airlines have a responsibility for getting you to your final destination regardless of any delays on route.

However, when you buy separate tickets – then the airlines have no such obligation to you. So should your flight to Amsterdam be delayed or cancelled such that you miss your connecting flight – you may very well find that you have to buy another ticket from Amsterdam to your final destination, which could prove expensive.

Hymie, my local airport is unfortunately LHR. Hence my idea of returning to LHR and having the onward flight from either LGW or LCY so that I can simply collect my baggage and forego the onward leg to AMS.
