There doesn't seem any point in trying to tell what life was like back then. Most of you seem to be ''full up an't door shut''. You all believe statistics. When my gran used to tell what life was like in the 20s/30s I would listen, not contradict and take on board what she was saying with respect. You have to have lived through an era before you can really know what it...

Mamy...NO.
There was a lamp post that we all gathered around and one member stayed at the lampost whilst the others (maybe 8-10 in the gang) ran away and hid. The idea was to get back to the lamppost , touch it and shout "LURKY" without being touched by the " guard" who would shout after touching me "LURKY SQAD"
If this was played after dark, it was more exciting and the game ended when all the gang had got back to the post without being caught OR being tagged.
Good eh?

There were some warped games as well, including one involving breath holding and a tight squeeze to make the victim faint. Another craze was hypnosis I was quite good at it, but looking back it was so dangerous. Chicken cross the road, daring each other to jump from the rear platform of buses, oh yes and picking on anyone different. That was a favourite game. Stretching fishing line from lamppost to lamppost across the road to knock people off bikes. Another dangerous, potentially lethal game. As townies denied the fun of scrumping some friends decided shop lifting was an alternative. Oh yes those were the days....
Reading early pages of this thread are horrifying & I wonder at some rearing. My parents worked to raise 5 kids & had their 60th anniversary. Never beaten or raped but mutual respect. I was wed for 40y till OH died. We honoured our vows thru thick & thin. My kids are reared similarly and dont diss or harm their partners or kids.
