Some really good suggestions here that I hadn't considered. We have a holiday booked but will be back before the 'day'. So we can discount the going away together idea.

What about a hot air balloon flight? For a special birthday, we organised the hot air balloon people to come and set up on one of our fields (OK we have the space but you could always go to their launch point). My father still talks about it now and that was 10 years ago.

a little trip to the Red Sea? In the UK, to Redditch, (tony would cringe) or Redruth (I would cringe at that) but then there are a couple of very nice hotels not that far away.....
