Just got fined £12.00 for not paying my credit card on time. My fault. No excuse. Never happened before. Won’t ever happen again, but do many of you set up a standing order to pay it off without checking each receipt?
Is it leaving me open to being conned?
Am just thinking that if I had to go into hospital for some time, would it make it easier to set something like this up?

Apologise, admit it's your fault, and make some excuse up like not being well. If you have a good payment history, chances are they will wipe the fine. They did me.
I pay by DD and have a brief run thro the monthly statement to see that all is OK. Never been fined never had a problem.
Why does anyone need a credit card?
I’ve got a direct debit that just gives them the minimum payment. That way I don’t get a penalty and I can look at the statement later (if I forget to do it earlier, as is usual)
Why does anyone need a credit card? I have one but I never use it. Well, I won't say never. I use it once a year to keep it active and I only have it in case we go on a fly drive to the states, where it's very difficult to hire a car without a credit card. I have a debit card, which is very useful, but a credit card? Nah!!
The main advantage of a credit card, apart from supplying credit of course, is that in the event of any dispute with the supplier of goods you have a claim against the credit card company.
Mmm. I understand that Jack but that's not why people use them is it? They use them because they want things they can't afford, instead of being sensible and budgeting. I'm sure there are claims against credit card companies, but they must be in a tiny minority.
Wow big assumptions ^ 10C. I don't need it but I use my CC all the time and my DD is set to pay the whole amount off every month. I don't live beyond my means and I don't owe money to anyone. However, I get paid every time I use my card because I get a percentage back which is paid into my account once a year. And of course I earn more interest on the money in my current account because it stays there longer. Win Win don't you think? Lots of people use their card sensibly although I do agree there will be people who use them as you have suggested.
I don’t have a credit card. Only a debit car so don’t have to worry about that sort of thing.
I always pay mine by DD to prevent this kind of thing happening. My statement comes out on the 9th of the month but the DD doesnt come out until the 1st of the following month so I have nearly a month to check the statement and see if there are any transactions that I disagree with.
As ladybirder has said.....I also use my credit card all the time, pay off the bill in full each month and have NEVER payed any interest. It's simply used as a convenience...
Yep - exactly the same as ginge - they make absolutely zilch out of me, I never spend what I can't repay before any interest is due - but they allow me to kick the occasional bigger bill (new carpets this month) a few weeks down the road so that it can be met from monthly income rather than savings.
They don't make any money out of you personally but they charge the suppliers a percentage so they still make money from your use of the card.
jno, cheque? you on the electric yet?
We have 35 days interest free on our credit card. Payed by direct deposit from our debit account when due. Couldn't be easier and it's safe.

Every few days or so I log onto the account and check transactions.

Why spend our money when it can earn a tad of interest.

Every purchase we do from milk and bread to major items is via credit card.
Same here. I only use my debit card to draw cash.
I use my CC's for online shopping rather than put my debit card, which is attached to real money, at risk. Additionally both of my cards have loyalty schemes so I make a few quid each month. Like others have said, I never pay interest on my cards. Most of my savings is in accounts where it would take a few days to access it so to have a line of credit then and there in case of emergency is also very useful.
I used to use them late last century, TTT, and even now there’ll be one or two people a year who don’t take electronic payments. You paid everything with used fivers?
