Well it seems you do have a point regarding that figure of 40%.
It was a quote I saw in a newspaper article so I decided to look into it more closely.
Well you know how it is with the internet facts are difficult to come by everybody has differing opinions especially in these days of fake news.
And of course there are different parameters deciding what is meant by poverty.
But by comparing many figures it seems that 40% is not correct.
But it does state in several government statistics 43 million of Americans are living in poverty maybe this is what the newspaper article got confused with
In any case For a nation apparently the richrst in the world 43 million is still a pretty damning figure.

How poor is the average American amongst the 43 million compared with the average person living in Niger or Chad, for example?
