The recently deceased Ursula le Guin was a very famous writer of fantasy/sci-fi novels, some of her works are classics of the genre - try the Earthsea trilogy first, it's ostensibly a work for young adults but I now plenty of (alleged) adults who've read & enjoyed it, including me. At all costs avoid the adaptation that was done for television a few years ago, it's abysmal.
