I'm confused by your pattern as your alter two suggestions don't fit your pattern.
I did suggest BURACH on anothe rthread as it fitted the given pattern and is a n anagram and the name of a Scottish rock band- but if there is a scottish word that fits teh definition I'd go with that. scorpiojo is almost always right
Are you actually doing the crossword fiction- feast? If so you would see that the 3rd letter of 1a is the 1st letter of 2d which is an R. Therefore answer can not be BRUACH and as I suggested the answer is probably BURACH.
There are two Scottish words meaning a confused heap, BOORACH and BOURACH and Keith is using a similar spelling.
