if i sign up for multi room do i have to have my sky box connected to my phone line? if so why? and is there any way round this?
also with multi room can the other rooms in the house also have sky +?

Sky want you to connect your Sky box to the phone line in the hope you will use some of their online options such as pay movies and so on.

Once the sky people have left you can just unplug it again.

Note that with your sky box you can also set a spending limit, and also require a pin before going online, so you can limit it.

I have multi room.

I have Sky+ in one room and an ordinairy Sky box in the other room. This meant I only had to buy one Sky+ box.

Note that BOTH need to be connected to the phone line.

(but as I said, you can unplug them both once the Sky fitters have gone).
