Willem Arondeus was a Dutch artist, writer, and member of the anti-Nazi Resistance Movement.



In March 1943 he bombed the Amsterdam Public Records Office to destroy the documents the Nazis had been using to track down Jewsih people for persecution.



Willem Arondeus was executed by the Nazis on July 1st 1943 for the actions he took to defend Jewish people from Nazi persecution. His last words were “Let it be known that homosexuals are not cowards”.



His self-sacrifice is a reminder that we are not defined by our race, sex, creed, or sexuality but by our actions, and what we do in life to help others.



His memory is also a reminder that decent people must never give up the fight against fascism and the extreme-right.

He spoke wise words, I found his art very moving too - especially one of his late works 'Purgatory', it said so much.

If we are defined mainly by our actions, perhaps the fact that he was homosexual is completely irrelevant.
