Square Duvet And Rectangular Duvet Covers!

In general are all duvets square in shape and all covers rectangular?
And if so, why?!

My duvets aren't square, they're all rectangular.

The only size duvet that's square is a double.

Standard Sizes
Single duvet 135x200cm (53 inches x 78 inches approx)
Double duvet 200x200cm (78 inches x 78 inches approx)
King duvet 230x220cm (90 inches x 86 inches approx)

Exactly mamyalynne, that's what I'm asking - why is a double duvet duvet is square? Or if they all are square then why are covers rectangle? The last 2 covers I have bought have a big empty gap at the bottom when I out the duvet in them!

Duvets are sized to cover the bed with some overhang - your covers should be a similar size - mine are.

Some cheap covers come off size, but not significantly. But they usually measure out at about 1" bigger all round to offset the thickness of the duvet

I've found that cheaper cover don't fit as well.

Ah, the last couple of covers that I bought were out of Tesco and not very expensive so that might explain the size issue.

You can get some decent quality ones from Amazon at a reasonable price.

Like you I bought some from a supermarket and there was a gap. I'd end up getting my toe caught in it and it'll pop open and then the duvet would be half hanging out in the morning.

On the subject of duvet covers - why do they nearly all come with fiddly buttons or poppers as closures rather than Velcro fastenings? OK, the occasional one has a zip fastener but they always seem to break.
