Coffee Machine
39 Answers
Does anyone have any recommendations for a coffee machine, not one of these really expensive ones. I had a Nespresso one before but it wore out after a year and I was not overly keen on the coffee, normally only use them for cappuccino, not espresso. I see the Dolce Gusto have good reviews and the pods are readily available or is there another one that you would recommend. Thanks.

Hi Riptide, if you just want great espresso/americano for under £50 you can buy an' Excelvan' from' ilivingdeals' on ebay. I 've bought one to replace my old Charles Jacobs which gave me a good 3 yrs service, and you can't beat it for the money. It's the same system as my old one just an updated pattern. ( the 'steamer' is excellent also)You can buy whatever ground coffee you prefer or obviously grind you own. No pods !!!
I love my early morning ritual of using the cafetiere. Hubby makes a big pot and we share it (or he makes a second when I get up) and I often make a small decaff for myself. I try to source decaff that's been treated by the water method, not by chemicals. Whole Earth do a nice'no caff' for if I've had enough.
Nothing causes more drain/sewer blockages than the impenetrable sludge caused by a mixture of coffee grounds and grease - and coffee grounds are not brilliant on compost heaps either.
There's a school of thought that says it's better for the grounds to be contained within a pod and then either put in secure landfill or incinerated.

Sunnydave - we used to put it on the compost heap, but now it just goes straight in the bin. We're very conscious of what goes down the sink as we have a septic tank. Hubby spent a significant part of the weekend clearing the drain out - it was running slow and he managed to flush it through with drain rods and buckets of water. Not bad going really as it had been 25 years since he last cleared it.
When I was a teenager the house we lived in had issues because the landlord was a bit of a skinflint. He had laid the drains himself and used a small diameter pipe as it was cheaper. We lived in a block of four houses and were the last in line before it got to the main sewer - poor Dad spent many an anguished hour rodding them out :(
