Microsoft have been planning this release for a long time.
It is all part of a major rewrite of Windows so that it can run fine on tablets as well as desktop PCs and laptops (as well as adding much new function of course).
This current set of updates is called "Redstone" and we have already had Redstone 1 to 4 and this Autumn release is Redstone 5.
I consider this a major "negative" about Windows 10, that every 9 months or so you get a complete replacement of Windows.
This is a lot of data to download, and potential for something major to go wrong.
I have a number of PCs in my house and they can run EITHER Windows 7 or Windows 10 (I have two hard disks for each PC and switch them around).
However I am staying on Windows 7 on all the PCs until they stop all these major updates.
I put the Windows 10 hard disk in the PC now and again to update Windows but as a family we don't actually USE Windows 10, we still use Windows 7 on all our PCs.
I think Microsoft are trying to make Windows a bit like Android or iOS for our phones and tablets, that have major upgrades now and again.
But there is a big difference to installing a new version of Android and a new version of Windows.

That's standard - two updates a year.
I too had doubts about Win 10 & hung onto Win 7 with a laptop. Then had to get a new desktop, which came with Win 10 of course. Found that I liked it. Granted, there was the occasional glitch but nothing major.
The only big problem was an update that hung up in v1709, for 45 days! Rebuilt the OS, updated to v1803, & it's been smooth sailing ever since. Did the same to the laptop.
Even at work they have gone from 7 to 10, & you know how conservative institutional IT departments are.

Vista was the OS on my previous PC. Ran fine but the PC expired shortly after the OS.
I'm sure you know it is no longer supported:

Heck, I know people who are still running XP. Perhaps the warnings are just another Chicken Little tactic to sell new stuff.
