Why are cows called cows? why arent they called beef?

why when we cook cow.. do we change its name?
when we cook chicken we dnt call it somthing random.

Lamb is still called lamb even after we cook it...

and pork 2.... y jus call pigs pork instead?

The word 'cow' has existed in English since about 800 AD, whilst, 'beef' is a relative newcomer, from half a millennium later. I guess that explains why they aren't called 'beefs'. Nevertheless, cattle were called 'beeves' - 'beefs' in America - in past times.

The names for the live animals are the anglo-saxon names which is why most are very similar to the German words for the same thing.
In 1066 the Normans conquered England and introduced the French words which were used for the meat. Of course, being the lords they didn't get their hands dirty with the live animals. Hence: pork = French porc; mutton = mouton; beef = boeuf. Lamb is a fairly recent invention as far as food is concerned.

Beef is the name of the meat obtained from cows - likewise with pork, veal, venison, mutton, chicken, and turkey. It's just that some animal/meat names are the same and some aren't!
