New Laptop - have internet connection ond old laptop, now need it on new laptop also

Hi,
I don't understand!
I am currently connected to the internet (AOL Broadband Silver). I have a wireless router but my laptop is currently connected to router using the cable supplied as the laptop is a few years old now and therefore not wireless enabled.
I have now bought a new laptop which has everything in place for wireless connection. I just assumed it would just be a case of searching for a connection in the room and away I go! No the case.
Do I need to connect to Router using a cable even though I would like wireless connection? Am I supposed to be re-installing the original AOL broadband set up software received?
This wireless connection business is just a tad confusing if you ask me!
Thanks

With my set-up, I can either be connected to the internet by pc hardwired to the broadband moden OR laptop wirelessly by the router. I can't be connected by both at the same time.
This is because my desktop is not connected to the router.
