For one thing, people who are afflicted with psychopathy or sociopathy are often highly capable of convincing even trained professionals that they are rehabilitated when they aren't. The consequences of 'getting it wrong' in this case would be too disastrous to risk, imo.
I also have a problem with the media sharing quite so much information about the case - and in particular with them sharing how he was caught. Anyone else who's thinking of planning a similar act will be reading his mistakes (even the obvious ones) closely - the cumulative effect of that over time will be to make them even harder to catch. I think perhaps stricter reporting restrictions need to be considered for cases like this.
