It's the RED THROATED DIVER - perhaps it would have helped to add it to the information you've provided fiction-factory (it's a lot to read and the name is easily missed).
'gos' (Old English) is given in the Chambers entry for 'goose'.
Variations in the rain goose's call are said to predict rain.
Hope you don't mind me mentioning it but the wrong bird seems to have been selected.

Thanks Prof. Yes, I missed it the first time but now see it mentions "Rain-goose or Red-throated diver or loon" in the blog article in the link. No mention of red breasted goose anywhere.
