The clue ends up as a 4 letter word when a 5 letter herring is removed. I am left with a.is. Any help gratefully received.

I note you meant 9 letters.
So when the 5 letter word for a herring is removed you are lefy with
A?IS - is that right? (your last dot being a full stop)

Your duplicate thread had the title Unusual Supspects. Des that mean there is a theme to tthe answers?
Does the 5 letter word precede the 4 letter word to give the 9 letter answer- or are they interspersed.
Maybe CA is part of it

Looks promising, danny, Maybe there is no definition for these- unless the caparison is iused with a pony and trap. i need to look up ARIS.
I had though of CALAMARIS but dropped the idea as i thought ARIS didn't seem like a word- maybe AXIS

FF, you're right about the theme in this excellent crossword. It's the August puzzle from the Crossword Centre - so only a couple of days old! It's very good of experienced setters to do these puzzles.
