can anyone suggest a way to repair the tiny holes that appear in cotton t shirts

you can buy a tape that you iron on the inside of garment to hold edges together.

I was thinking along those lines too, mally.

Only drawback I seem to remember was that they only come in 3 colours, white, grey or black and can be a swine to sort out after clothing has been washed.

I covered them up with sequins. Looks fine, but perhaps only for the ladies.
