22 yards is 20.11 metres so almost exactly the same as now.

In the Motor Vehicle (Driver Licences) Regulations of 1937 the required distance was 25 yards or 75ft. In 1971, to reflect a change in number plate size, the distance was amended to 67 feet (20.5 Metres).
Although the requirement to read a number plate at a distance of 20m came into force in 2003 this did not represent a change in standard but was as a result of the font size on the new number plate.
