Can you grow your own butternut squash in this country? And if so how do you go about doing it?

A kind friend has given me three butternut squashes in pots, I think she grew them from seed. All three have produced small squash which are growing rapidly.

Hi
I live in derby midlands. Bought some butternut squash to cook and saved some seeds from them. Planted about 12 in a pot outside (south facing garden) in early may, they all took about 1 week for seedlings to appear) but I planted 3 of the best in 2 upturned half filled compost bags. The strongest is wandering accross our pebbled garden. some of the leaves are turning yellow am I giving it too much water? Shall I let it roam?
Would appreciate any info.
