I would consider gold to be very sober (and perhaps a tad old fashioned), whereas silver might just be inadequate. I personally prefer white gold. But again, look out for what she usually wears and the stuff she likes.

years ago, tdvit, the rule of thumb was to spend a month's salary on the engagement ring, but thankfully that practice seems to be dying out! i prefer white gold too and think it looks much better than gold - gold is too often worn by mumpers, bought in large quantities from Argos or something and just isn't classy enough.
