A year in which he won numerous titles and, while it's true that he lost in 4 sets to Sam Querrey (no mug) in the 3rd round at Wimbledon, he did win the Rogers cup in late July without dropping a set. A first round Olympic exit was followed by being beaten in the final slam tournament of the year, the US Open, losing in 4 sets to Stan Wawrinka (again, no mug). That loss confirmed Andy Murray as World Number One but Novak ended the year with a runner up spot in the World Tour Finals. All in all, he broke his own ranking points record, taking it to a new high of 16,790 and became only the third player in the history of the game to hold all 4 slam titles at the same time. Yep, that's what i call a career going down the pan!
