Hi, I'm looking for a word that means because something has gone on for many years, it is now accepted practice. It is an old fashioned word (I think) and I can't for the life of me remember.

customary practice what you mean in legal terms is - through use and toleration has become an implied term of the contract and there is quite a lot of case law attached to quite a lot of the contributions here I like: Judgie-baby - I dont care how long you have done this from custom - if I think a practice is negligent I will find it so compared with: SAS court martial -...

prosaic?

kval, without going into too much detail, this has arisen at work (at least three other people are on the case of "find the word"). Basically for the past thirty plus years staff have been getting an extra "perk" (in this case a day off) over and above what was in their contract in relation to working a bank holiday. Everyone (including former managers) knew about it and worked to it, a new MD is now asking for proof of these accrued days (I don't think he is aware of the past "agreement"). We can only show proof for half of these days, the other half being the "perk", which was never official but had been in place forever.
It is in this context that we are looking for the "word" basically to show that since the practice had been in place for so long it was accepted, and therefor staff who acquired days under this system, should not now lose them.
I hope this explains the situation more clearly.
hackneyed?

Thank you everyone I think Peter has it. Apologies for the slight mislead as it was obviously not one word.

Yeah 'customery practice' sounds about right to me :) Go Pete x
You have the correct answer, ?well done pp. :-)
I think the word you are looking for is' Ritual'. A repeated practice carried on for years. Rites of passage, Christmas, Halloween and so on . Repeated over and over until they become an accepted ritual.
the "official" term as has been said is custom and practice.
I won't suggest ex gratia then as that's getting summat for nowt, although it seems you got that.
Gizmonster answered 'customary' @11.14.

Whilst "custom and practice" and "customary" were mentioned previously, it was Peter's explanation and definition that more closely resembled what I was asking for. Once again I thank everyone for their time and efforts on my behalf.

.... yea and I would have said , "customary practice" (HONEST), if I hadn't been told it was only one word :)
