Who owns the beaches around the UK ?

I have found this extract from yahoo answers and would like to know more. "The area above the high water mark belongs to whoever owns the adjacent land. Some of it is privately owned, but most belongs to local authorities. The area between the high water mark and the low water mark belongs to the Crown. So if you know of a private beach, wait until the tide goes out and you can walk on the wet sand - you have the Queen's permission."
I am cross that at the end of this month my little old dog is not allowed to take her daily walk on our local beach by way of a council ban. Now my little hound is old ...as am I and the beach where we are still allowed to walk is far to far for us both to manage. It is my understanding of this answer on yahoo that providing I carry her the couple of yards to where high water reaches, we will be able to walk without reproach during the summer. Any thoughts or information folks ?

sorry but even though your dog isn't setting foot on the beach, he is still on the beach even if in your arms... Blame the thoughtless idiots who let their dogs run riot and don't clean up after them. Btw I am a dog owner myself.

Unfortunately irresponsible dog owners have brought about the ban on beaches. To that end dogs and their poo shouldn't be allowed on the beach where children play in the summer.

I wish that parents would clean up after themselves and their children...including used nappies and condoms.

Crown foreshore - wildfowlers take their dogs on to it to retrieve shot wildfowl so I would have thought the answer was 'yes' if you can get on to it some other way.

Our beaches have an part where dogs are allowed in summer and not far from access points. Ask your councillor why there isnt a bit for dogs as there will be more like you. While "working" by the beach I see quite a few dogs illegally walked and nobody seems to bother if they are near water's edge and away from the kids play beach.

woofgang - the nappies and condoms are probably washed onto the beaches from sewage outlet pipes. I have farmer friends who have land adjacent to beaches. They haven`t been told that they own the land at the high water mark though. The privately owned beaches that I know of are owned by estates and they can apply their own regulations regarding dogs. I would be very surprised if there was any kind of grey area regarding rules.

No but I didn`t imply that you did. My reference to a grey area is with regards to the high/low watermark.

What I mean is that there is no grey area regarding rules as to who owns the beach between the high and low watermarks. I can`t see where the high and low tidal variance makes any difference. Where I come from, a couple of the beaches are owned by a private estate. The estate owners generously allow the public to use the beaches. They impose rules about taking dogs to the beach.

Depends on the beach and what the deeds say.

My brother in law owns down to low tide, the Duck of Cornwall beyond that.... there are several like that down here in the County.

The bro in law does not mind folk walking across over his land as long as they do not foul it up, other than a dog pee or poop.....

The land between high and low water usually belongs to the Crown, but not always. Some beaches belong to the MoD or local authorities. I don't know if any are wholly privately owned, but I suspect there are some.

Me, i find it incredibly egotistic to claim we own land! Its been here for millions of years before us and no doubt will be here for millions of years after us! ( As long as we succeed in complete and utter self destruction/inhalation, extinction of the human race PRIOR to destroying the beautiful planet we inhabit!) p.s preferably the former than the latter ... p.p.s and the sooner the better in my opinion ; )
