There were reports a few years back about the batteries inside them messing up. That's all sorted now. In fact, even back then it wasn't really a big deal like it was made out to be.
Only downside I know of is that it doesn't have an easily-removable battery. They are replaceable (the new ones are harder though), and they should last a few years. But, it's a turn-off for some.

Hi, i have a Creative Zen Micro and i'm on my 2nd replacement- they keep breaking, i think it's something to do with the components overheating and expanding :S Plus creatives have this strang thing which appears where you have to hold the earphone jack in a certain position for the audio to come through- so annoying! So i was thinking of getting an ipod (even though they're UGLY, they're the only thing that works with iTunes...) but my friend told me that they're just as bad and he's had 4 replacements of his! Apparently the nanos smash easily too. I've heard that iriver are good- no bad stories so far! Whatever you get, look after it in hot weather! :D
It's funny because after using any of the iPod 'killers', it becomes apparent none of them could kill a fly.
emailia: yes, when the nano first came out, several were reported to have cracked. usually this was due to people having them in their little jeans pocket (the one at the front designed for change, I think), and sitting down. The nano is a very small thing, and made out of plastic, so that sort of force on it as your legs bend is bound to crack it. I've had mine for over two and a half years now and it still works perfectly well (touch wood).
missjef: it may be wise to hold off for another month; there are some rumours that apple may go back to the old iPod mini design and make the nano case out of aluminium.
