Carers Allowance Info ?

I've been looking after my mother who's 92 next month for ages now and back in 2015 one of the social workers involved emailed me and said I should claim carers allowance but I could cope then so I didn't, partly 'cause I was proud of the fact that I'd never claimed any benefit at all. However, it would be very useful at the moment. Does anyone have any idea of how far retrospectively it can be claimed, I know its more than the three months oft quoted ? My other query would be how quick can it be done ?
Any clues please ?
