When we went we took American Dollars and they converted it, their used to it out there because they get so many of the american tourists because its not far for them to travel.
I have a feeling they take dollars, but a lot of the hotel staff are on such low pay and its nice to tip them, and as they work in Pesos you should have a few (they show you such gratitude for giving them like 1!) everyone is really lovely and friendly out there and you'll have an amazing time!
The short to your answer is Dollars-get it at the post office though as they don't charge commission!
Happy holidays!

I visted the Dom Republic in June this year. Although they except Amercian Dollars and Pesos. Pesos is properly the best currency to use. This is because when we changed our A.Dollars travellers cheques, we were given pesos. Also the airports prefer Pesos.Dont forget that you have to pay your taxes for coming into the Country and when departing the Country in Pesos.
Finally I would recommend that you go White Water Rafting and on the Jeep Safari!
Hope this helps!

I didnt go swimming with the dolphins because Id had already experienced that in Cancun! Although it is a good place to do it.The Jeep Safari takes you right into the Domincian countryside, where you see how the local dommicians live. They are the nicest, happiest people you will meet considering how they live! you dont get to see many animals apart from local farm animals! Its called Jeep Safari coz you go on these massive Jeeps which take you through the water, its really fun with all the beer, rum, coke etc you can drink! The hotels are used to converting dollars into pesos and vice versa so I shoudnt worry about it that much, take some local Domincian currency in cash and the rest in cheques. Finally be prepared to tip alot! and avoid the porters at the airport! they dont take "NO" for an answer.
