Are Slimming Clubs For Every One?

Aged 77 my wife has a number of different medical problems among which are: Arthritis. Under active thyroid. She is also waiting a knee replacement. She takes a cocktail of tables to deal with her condition. We feel that we would benefit if we could loose weight. However, in our opinion we don't eat to excess have cut back on our food intake. I always feel that dieting goes together with exercise, but exercise id not feasible due to a degree of loss of mobility. We have discussed slimming clubs but my wife is reluctant to go even though I said I would go with her. I know that under-active thyroid is a problem because it impacts on her metabolism. She also takes prescribed steroids.
Any Thoughts?

It suits some but not others. The camaraderie helps, the knowing that you are going and be weighed is a great incentiviser for those times when you are tempted to ease up a bit. But I think it is a, “try it and see”, type of situation.

I’m less into believing one has to exercise as well. For sure it helps, and is good for other health reasons, but one has to do a lot of exercise to burn off even consuming a small treat. So whilst immobility is a disadvantage I don’t think it is overwhelming. Concentrate on reducing input such that it is less than output rather than worry about increasing output to compensate for too much input.

When I was more successful at losing weight than I am today, I used to find many many small changes were the key. Trying to find one large thing to change, and being willing to forgo it, is difficult. A sort of “look after the ounces and the pounds will look after themselves” sort of thing.
I don't think any of these fitness clubs or such like are any good at anything except parting you from your hard earned cash.
They are a modern day FAD hyped up by the media, and by companies ready to make easy money.

I have taken a walk round my local park at random times for ad many years as I can remember. I am fit, free of fat, low in cholesterol and happy. I don't smoke and drink very little very rarely.

Sitting around is, to my mind, the biggest cause of overweight, and health problems these days. The couch potato brigade. Get up, get out and walk. Sitting around is leading you to an early death. Great exercise, you meet lovely people, hear the birds singing, and start to look good. Fresh air really IS good for you, and above all......it's free!!
I know your wife has mobility problems, but just being out in the fresh air is really beneficial.
Spanner, good advice but only if mobile enough to actually walk and get fit like that. Unfortunately some people would love to but just cannot do it.
Have you considered Tai Chi. There are classes for the more 'senior citizens' where classes are tailored to meet a variety of mobility problems.
Not easy to get up, get out and walk though when you have mobility problems Spannerfiend .I can sympathise with davidk65's wife .
I'm a decade younger and am racked with arthritis and walk with a stick so I'm afraid strolling round the park for me would be total agony unless I was as high as a kite on painkillers.
I Also have an under active thyroid and it does affect your metabolism Some medication especially steroids make you put on weight .Been there too.
I'm not too overweight but could do with losing a bit .I'm tall and can get away with a few extra pounds .
I went to a slimming club years ago but it wasn't for me .I don't do group stuff and I found them to be very patronising .If you had only lost half a pound they made you feel like a little kid who had raided the sweetie jar :)
I don't eat to excess either but if you can't move about quickly enough to burn off what you are eating it's hard .
I haven't got an answer for you dave but hope it helps your wife to think she's not alone .
If health conditions are not good then such type of institute will be not good and capable for it.
