School opens its own foodbank over Universal Credit hunger fears
"We don't want hungry children", said the school's principle.

A school in Middlesbrough has revealed that is launching its own "pop-up foodbank", over fears that the introduction of Universal Credit in the region will leave children hungry as parents are made to wait several weeks for an initial payment.

Craig Wright, assistant principal of the Outwood Academy, told TeesideLive: “We will be launching a pop-up foodbank to coincide with the roll-out of Universal Credit.

“We know that Universal Credit will affect our families in our community and the six-week wait especially will mean lots of our families will suffer in that time with a lack of resources.

“We’re launching a pop-up foodbank which will help to meet their needs in whatever way we can.”

This is what you get with a Tory government - couldn't give a monkeys about ordinary people. Come on DUP, get out of this unhealthy alliance.

"This is what you get with a Tory government..."

Yeah right. It’s all down to the wicked Tories.

The Trussel Trust (the main Food Bank provider in the UK) opened its first food bank in 1999 (for those who cannot remember, that was two years after Labour came to office). It’s true that the numbers have continually grown since that launch (including during the remaining eleven years of the Labour administration, five years of the Coalition and three years of a Conservative government). It’s possible that the reason for this growth is a mix of unmet need for food banks and greater awareness of them as the their numbers grow. I’m inclined to go with the latter. After all, if I found out there was somewhere I could get free petrol for my car or a free fish supper once a week I’d probably get down there.
But you can't just "get down there". You need to get a voucher from an approved agency, or in some cases a family physician. And that doesn't entitle you to unlimited food or visits...or a fish supper.
Unless you count tinned sardines.
Zero hours contracts hardly count as proper employment, they are simply an abuse of the individual. One can look for proper employment whilst with an agency.
“You need to get a voucher from an approved agency, or in some cases a family physician.”

Then, like the users of food banks, if I really wanted to I'd find one. I think I’ve related this tale on AB before: I once witnessed two customers emerging from a food bank. One untied a large dog who probably ate more than he did, and crossed the road with his carrier bag and disappeared into the nearest bookies. The other emerged with two large bags full of goodies and met his partner outside. A few steps up the road he peeled off some notes from a wedge in his pocket and instructed her to go to the local Tesco Express to get the additional liquid refreshment to accompany their new supplies whilst he loaded the bags into their car. Both weighed twice as much as they should do and if their “family physician” had prescribed them food as a cure he was grossly irresponsible.

All by the by because the main point of my original post was that the use of food banks is by no means restricted to times when a Conservative government is in power (as was suggested in the original post).
I can just picture the scene, NJ. Reminds me of Wayne and Waynetta Slob.
