Possession, dealing in and production of drugs are illegal in the Netherlands. However, drug use is not punishable.
The Dutch code of law differentiates between soft- and hard drugs because of the differences in health risks
‘Coffee shops’ selling drugs are tolerated from the perspective of health protection but they still have to buy from the black market. I believe there is a bill going through their parliament to Legalize the production and consumption.

I have always believed, and stated on this site many times, that the so-called 'War On Drugs' is a seriously expensive futile waste of time and resources.
We don't have a choice about whether or not we have drugs in our society - that ship sailed long ago, so trying to pretend that we do have a choice to stop people taking drugs is about as effective as telling people not to boil kettles to save the planet.
We have drugs, they are there to stay. Our choice as a society is how we manage them, and control their distribution and use.
Clearly attempting to make that against the law has, and continues to singularly fail, at obscene expense to the pubic purse
Re-aligning our approach to be grown-up about drugs, and treating them in line with 'acceptable' drugs like tobacco and alcohol, is a good first step towards proper education and control of the issues caused by drugs.
It's time to stop pretending that we can 'win the war on drugs' when anyone can see how pointless that is, and get on with dealing with the issues in ways that are efficient and cost-effective for the good of our future society.
