Whilst travelling to the Isle of Thanet we pass under a bridge/tunnel. At each side of this there are traffic lights. We have never seen the lights at red and cannot understand why they are there. There seems to be no exit or entrance to the road and the tunnel is not very long as you can see right through it . Why the traffic lights please?

In the event of an unusually wide load, the traffic would be stopped both ways to allow the load to travel in the centre of the tunnel.... same goes for a load that's a bit high

Also used for maintenance, grid cleaning etc, when only one way traffic will be allowed.

Thanks for reply but I don't think the road under this tunnel is any narrower than the road itself and therefore would have no advantage for wide loads at this point.Also the lunnel is square across the top so hihg loads would not need to travel along the middle at this point. There seems to be no reason for this tunnel anyway.The ground isn't high eitherside and nothing runs over the top ie another road or railway. Im still mystified.
