Further to Spath's thread about the lady spy on bank notes, who do you think we ought to honour with a place on the notes? Both serious and flippant replies welcome. x
I think:-
Alan Turing
JRR Tolkien
Emily Bronte
Robert Thompson
William Morris
Douglas Bader. Hmm. After carrying Bader up and down the stone spiral staircase at Colditz for years, his batman finally got a phone call from Bader once they were both home.
“Where are my spare legs?” Bader demanded.
“I don’t know, sir,” replied the batman.
“You ****” exclaimed Bader ( a word which (a) rhymed with shunt and (b) would have got him banned from Abank) and slammed the phone down.
If we're going to have Ada Lovelace (as has already been suggested), surely we should have Charles Babbage too?
A few more from the top of my head:
Sir Norman Foster
Douglas Adams
Alan Coren
Henry Moore
Tim Berners-Lee
John Napier
Henry Fox Talbot
Brian Rix might also be a possibility because of his unstinting work for charity. However, given his theatrical origins, it would be hard to decide whether he should be depicted with his trousers up or down ;-)
As someone who's pro-Europe, I'd have no objection to seeing a Polish-born French citizen depicted on our banknotes but, Andres, I think that quite a few others might well object to your nomination of Marie Curie!
I'd nominate my mate John - Ebeneezer for short. Never seems to have any money when it's his turn to pay. If his mug was on the notes, he's vain enough to want to grab every opportunity to flash the cash.
