I think I have it. It is "pop off". I thought that it meant "to die" and so it does but it also means "to fall asleep".
I have "pop" off because of the word "popular" in the clue - however I always forget to check the answers in the following Monday paper!!!!

Is "pi" a convention in crosswords for good or pious as I have never come across it before?. That's probably why I've become stuck a few times.
