I Can Hear Running Water

I can always hear trickling/running water coming from my cistern. There is no water coming into the bathroom around the toilet and when I lifted up the cistern lid, I couldn’t see any leaks.

What can I do to stop it and will it be affecting my water bill? I’ve just had a water meter fitted, but I could hear it before this took place.

My flush is the double “press down” mechanism.

Last thought. With the top off press ,in turn, each of the white and blue levers ( one at a time. )

I presume it must be a dual flush, ie, two buttons, one short flush, the other a longer flush.

Push down and quickly release finger to allow flap to spring to original position and see if outlet is effectively sealed.

These things work by lifting a plug out of the hole in the bottom of the cistern releasing the water. Usually the weight of water in the cistern is sufficient to keep the plug with it's rubber seal watertight.

Just tried that, Sparkly but no dice. Water still trickling into the bowl. Thank you.

My landlord has told me he is trying to get a plumber ASAP.

All fixed. It needed both plunger mechanisms replaced.

Excellent, was it done without the need to take the cistern off the pan and away from the wall.

Or was it possible to replace the unit with the cistern in situ, just curious and pleased you are sorted.

If there has been leakage for some time and you have incurred additional water charges, you may want to have a look at your tenancy agreement to see if you could claim the extra money back.

As Chrissa says she has only just had a water meter fitted then I doubt she will have incurred much in the way of additional water charges.

Landlord's obligation began yesterday when Chrissa reported the issue, he has acted promptly.

I’m not sure Sparkly. I left him to it. I have noticed that the lid of the cistern is not as close to the wall as it was and he took a large bucket of “grout?” into the bathroom.

In a phone message this morning my landlord said that if I had incurred any extra charges he wouldn’t see me out of pocket. Though, as Ladybirder said, the meter was only installed on Monday, so I’m not overly worried.

It is so wonderful to have a landlord who cares. My last one would have left me for weeks before doing anything.

Glad all is sorted. I would have thought the cistern would have to be taken off the wall so the faulty flush mechanism could be unscrewed.
