how do we know that the island in lost is an island?

I have also wondered about this question

Nobody on the island has actually walked around it and ended up where they started ... so how have they come to the conclusion that they are on an island.

All they know is that they were off-course, and then crashed.
There could be a massive city just a dozen miles inland.

I must agree with you. Thats the type of question i ask all the time and then everyone tells me its just a program. But what if its not, what if its a TV Reality show designed either for them or for us? I may be thinking this through to much?!
