I wonder if the French authorities will demand that they are sent back to face charges of boat theft?
/// This latest incident underlines why we need to significantly boost our borders budget - and increase the number of vessels patrolling the whole border. ///
Why the need when they will only be used to safely bring even more economic migrants to our country?

They lose their status as refugees if they fail to present themselves to the authorities in the first safe country they encounter. France is a safe country (if not exactly th eone they'd prefer). From the UN Convention on the status of refugees:
Article 31 (Refugees unlawfully in the country of refuge)
1. The Contracting States shall not impose penalties, on account of their illegal entry or presence, on refugees who, coming directly from a territory where their life or freedom was threatened in the sense of article 1, enter or are present in their territory without authorization, provided they present themselves without delay to the authorities and show good cause for their illegal entry or presence.
Those in France have not come directly from a country where they were under threat. Hence they are not refugees but simply chancers.

I despair. How much longer are we going to allow illegal immigrants to weave their way around the legislation that precludes unlawful entry to the UK. Until the authorities "grow a pair" and take decisive action and deport all these people they will continue to make unlawful entry. The government must make decision to remove all these unlawful entrants immediately. Asylum has to be claimed at the first safe country - i.e. not the UK.
