Clockwise
Question Author
I was sure it was anticlockwise opening a screwtop bottle. I don't want to crack anything by using pliers the wrong way.
Which way do you turn your taps to stop the water flow?
Clockwise.

Opening a screw top bottle, anti-clockwise creates a flow of liquid.

Clockwise!
Isn't it back to front in Australia?

Thank you both. I am convinced and was trying to turn it anti-clockwise and have probably damaged it in so doing.
Not back to front Spicey, upsidedown ;-/

Most probably haven't done damage Stargazer, just made it harder to close.
I know your water goes down the plughole the 'wrong way'.
What?

Our plug 'oles aren't fountains.

Imagine standing in your shower and having the water shooting up your rectum and the droplets that pass by being sucked into the shower rose.
LOL 1ozzy.
I would suggest that you lubricate the knob/valve stem and let the oil penetrate for a while before using the pliers.
never mind this anti-clockwise/clockwise nonsense.

Just remember ''left is loosey, righty tighty''
What about a left handed thread ? Like a nut holding a fan blade on, ie, cooling fan on stand .
I always remember it by:- Rightie tightie, leftie Loosely, never forgotten it since I was told that :o)
Oops sorry Alba didn’t see your reply :o(

Back again! I turned it clockwise using the pliers until I felt it move. However, I realised that it was turning far too many times and that the plastic shroud had lost its grip. I unscrewed that and removed it but now don't know which bit to turn still using pliers. It is not obvious which bit is meant to turn.
Now you've removed the plastic nob the top of the stem that the nob was fixed to should either be square or have two flats at the top of the stem. A small spanner would be best to turn the valve, although if the valve isn't to tight you will probably get away with using your pliers.
You need to secure the 'shroud' as you put it. It has become loose. Dont worry, it can be completely removed from the thermostatic valve body and no water can leak out. Underneath the shroud you will find a collar. The collar needs to be tightened so as to secure your shroud down onto the the valve body ( in an anti clockwise direction).
When you have done that .. your valve can be controlled by turning it clockwise to close it and anti clockwise to open it and increase the temperature.
