Selling alcohol to underaged
23 Answers
My daughter started working on the checkouts of a local Supermarket on Monday. I went to pick her up from work tonight and she has been fined for selling alcohol to an underaged boy who was sent in to the store by the police. Whilst I am willing to pay the fine (she can't afford to yet and the fine has to be paid within 21 days) I feel that she should just have got a caution, due to the fact that she had only been working on the checkout for three days. I suppose that everyone will say that she should have asked for ID, but everyone makes mistakes and she is really upset about it. What do you think?

At our local Co-op, the same thing happened, and the checkout girl was instantly dismissed for gross misconduct. Which it was, I suppose - she got the company into a lot of trouble.
I can't believe she wasn't told about this, shops have to be so careful now.

I worked for Wilkinsons Hardware Stores for more than 18 years and although we obviously never sold alcohol we had test shoppers in who would try to buy glue, knives etc.The onus was always on the cashier to ask for i.d and if you did sell to an under age person you got rocket from the manager .These laws are there for a reason but I do not agree with the underhand methods used.Feel sorry for your daughter , but tell her not to take it to heart, just tell her to forget about it . I am sure she will more vigilant in the future. She's only human like the rest of us !!!
