It's a cake with seeds, ummmm, such a carraway, poppy or sunflower. My gran used to bake it. :)

I have tripe occasionally.

We used to have lava for breakfast (fried) with a bit of vinegar. I used to pick it with my Dad on Exmoor and Mum would spend ages preparing it. She would never buy it from a butcher's because she didn't trust them to clean it properly as it could contain grains of sand.
I`m not sure I would recognise it growing now although I still know where to get it.

We used to get ours from the Gower Peninsular. Dad insisted it be cooked in bacon fat always. Mum always moaned about the washing uo afterwards. Popular method is to mix it with bran and make cakes which are also fried.

Is that why they call it Lavabread in Wales?

It could be I suppose.We always called it that but when I saw it in the fishmongers in Barnstaple Market or Selfridges food hall it was just labelled Lava. I have a couple of tins somewhere at the bottom of our larder I think.

Malt extract. It came in a large brown bottle and was free. The concentrated orange juice that came with it was far tastier.

Lava is a finely shredded seaweed. Green like spinach and full of Iron.
Collected in Wales,Devon and Irish coasts and processed. Looks like green slime but an acquired taste.
Staple diet for patients at the Miners Rest Home ,Golden Bay, Porthcawl who suffered respiratory diseases from the pits. Poor Devils if they didn't like it :-)

I have never had a home made crumpet.

Talking of palma violets and childish treats I bought some Cream Soda pop recently which was a childhood favourite.
I couldn't drink a glass. Horrid, horrid stuff.
