Does anyone know the answer to this because it's been bugging me for years!! If with new money you put a "p" for pence, why when we had old money did we put a "d" after the pennies amount?? Thanks!

Cos it was originally expressed in Latin - denarii. Pounds was librae and although s for shillings matched I think it was something like solidi

The abbreviation used when writing old penny amounts was d - from the Roman denarii
