….after producers hint at ‘diversifying’ 007. ‘I think it’s more about, “We just want to have a black guy play James Bond” rather than, “Idris Elba, the actor, play James Bond”, he said.

Wouldn't this be that cultural whatever nonsense, where they object to white women have braids etc? James Bond is a white man, what will they do to Idris Elba, bleach him?? They didn't like the Black and White Minstrels changing colour, why should a black James Bond be acceptable? What's next, a white Othello? Laurence Fox playing Martin Luther King?

Othello's race is a central part of the story, though, so changing the actor would obviously at the very least change the meaning of the play.
MLK was a real person so clearly isn't comparable...
I don't see any reason why James Bond wouldn't work if the actor was black. The name is usually assumed to be a codename to explain why the actor/face changes so often. Bond isn't exactly a character of Shakespearean depth anyway so I struggle to think of any way in which his race is ever really central to the story.
//Krom I was trying to find a comparison and couldn’t think of one any suggestions?//
I'm not sure what you mean.

The original interview was in 2017 and the quote doesn't sound like it was a thought out comment, just a reply to an often asked question.
“I don’t know, man,” he says. “It’s interesting that the James Bond thing continues to go. I think it’s more about, we just want to have a black guy play James Bond rather than Idris Elba the actor play James Bond. That’s the part that I’m like, ‘Ugh, come on.’”
And he has recently been tweeting about it quite differently - so a non news article really dragged up becuae of his tweet.

When i go to the cinema to watch a bond film , i'm not really interested in the colour of the skin of 007
What keeps my attention is the implausibility of the story line
( unless of course it reflects the work of real spies - i've written to MI6 to enquire as to the life of a real agent - no reply so far
It's just a bit of escapism folks - why all this seriousness about who plays 007?
