Yes quite, the fruit farmers around my home county employ nearly 100% migrants because UK workers don't want that level of work.

Same old chestnut. Cheap imported labour on low wages living 15 to a tent. Do you really expect a couple with young children earning enough picking strawberries.

Possibly not but that young couple want cheap strawberries for their little darlings so they are part of the problem x

coal in this country is a thing of the past, we were importing coal a long time ago, now countries like Poland have a coal industry, after watching a piece on the news, it was, is a filthy job and no one should be doing it.

Although I recall many Pathe news reels of miners hauled to the pithead in the cages with black faces they soon became white again if lucky enough to have pit-head baths.
I reckon a load of Eastern Europeans would flock to the mines to work. Plenty of mines there but a dearth in St Kitts. :-)

I remember it well, klav. All the fruit and veg used to rot in the fields before we had cheap labour from our EU. It used to puzzle me why they bothered planting the darned stuff.

spicerack, now now, my gran and her family and friends all used to go hop picking in the summer months,
and later on students, those in part time work would work on the lands, we didn't need EU migrants then, not sure about now of course.

Actually, we had European workers since 1945 via the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Scheme. Labour discontinued the scheme when they created an endless stream of cheap labour for their filthy rich chums.
Interestingly, I see it's to be resurrected if we ever leave the EU.

That's correct spicey. They were German and Italians and they had big white P's stencilled on the back of their donkey jackets. :-)

We certainly had Europeans working here in 1950. local mill sent a representative to Italy where he recruited a dozen girls to came and work here.

There were a good many Eastern Europeans working in the North Staffordshire coal fields in the 60's. I know that for a fact.

I've been hearing that since the day I left school ( many years ago ) and I suspect every generation since and before has heard the same carp.
Although we are very very unlikely to find out these day's are we ?
No coal mines ,steel industry almost non existent and most of the big factories gone.
