Can a firm or company that you work for carry out a DBS check on you without your knowledge or consent?

I assume so. It's not like you have to sign anything to give permission.

Perhaps ? First link was for update
If you are on the DBS annual update service (whereby your DBS is reviewed/renewed annually) you can see who has accessed it. When I last checked I was surprised at who had acccessed it- I hadn't specifically been asked but assume I had implicitly given agreement somewhere, perhaps by clicking on some Ts and Cs I hadn't fully studies, so if you are concerened at who may access it you need to be careful about what you agree to.
So they can check then? It's early, I haven't slept, I can't take in info.

Minty, looked at your first link and saw that it was for an update but as it said that permission was needed to update then surely permission would have been needed to get one in the first place?

As for a BASIC first time criminal records checks, see the links from me and Murraymints. For standard or enhanced checks the employee normally needs to complete the form and provide ID docs so it can't be done without their knowledge agreement.
So it all depends on what kind of check you mean

Basic check - £25
The basic check can be used for any position or purpose. A basic certificate will contain details of convictions and cautions from the Police National Computer (PNC) that are considered to be unspent under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974.

Standard check - £26
The standard check is available for duties, positions and licences included in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975, for example, court officers, employment within a prison, and Security Industry Authority (SIA) licences.

A standard level certificate contains details of all spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings from the Police National Computer (PNC) which have not been filtered in line with legislation.

Enhanced check - £44
The enhanced check is available for specific duties, positions and licences included in both the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions Order 1975) and the Police Act 1997 (Criminal Records) regulations, for example, regularly caring for, training, supervising or being solely in charge of children, specified activities with adults in receipt of health care or social care services and applicants for gaming and lottery licences.

An enhanced level certificate contains the same PNC information as the standard level certificate but also includes a check of information held by police forces.

Enhanced with a barred list check - £44
The enhanced check with barred list check(s) is only available for those individuals who are carrying out regulated activity and a small number of positions listed in Police Act 1997 (Criminal Records) regulations, for example, prospective adoptive parents and taxi and Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) licences.

An enhanced level certificate with barred list check(s) contains the same PNC information and check of information held by police forces as an enhanced level check but in addition will check against the children’s and/or adult’s barred lists.

If your application includes a request to check the barred list(s) the DBS has a statutory duty to consider any information that suggests you may pose a risk of harm. We will write to you if you are affected.

DBS adult first check - £6
DBS adult first is a service available to organisations who can request a check of the DBS adults’ barred list. Depending on the result, a person can be permitted to start work, under supervision, with vulnerable adults before a DBS certificate has been obtained.

The reason that Im asking is because something was mentioned at my volunteer work the other day to the effect that they have to know about police records of their volunteers. Im out driving a van and pick up from schools and also work in the warehouse alongside special needs people who come in to help. They know that I have a police and prison record because I told them but I have never been consulted about doing a DBS check.

They can't run a DBS without you signing and providing relevant documents Nailit. But could you ask them about it if its playing on your mind? If they are supporting you in full knowledge of your record, do you think that would change after a DBS?
remember in this relation ship there is a tension between you desire to be given a chance ( so you want info private) and their need to know what is going on ( even if it doesnt concern them)

so your employer will say - they 'have' to do things or know things - that they dont because it doesnt concern them

In terms of DBS and kids you dont need anything by law because as a driver your chance of coming into unsupervised contact with kids in the course of your duties is nil. Some little jobsworf may well say - "yeah it dee law see? innit?" when it isnt

so you can make a fuss - but it may cost you your cards.

I was forced to do enhanced child protection ( up to nuclear level) even tho I was never in lone contact with any child of any age. and put up with it gristling and whining all the way
Who mentioned it at work? A co-worker? Unless it was management I would just take it as a fishing exercise (someone being nosy). I had a cleaning business a long time ago and I had to ask permission from prospective cleaners before doing DBS checks and I'm pretty sure they had to sign a release form of some sort. Anyone who refused did not get the job. If you have been up front with then about your Record I can't see a problem if they need a certificate. Ask your Boss outright -that usually works better than conjecture.
