Clue is Henry's 3/6 (but not 4 Old Bob) 1. 3/6 =Henry's third wife of six. 2.3/6 = 3 shillings & 6 pence which os less than 4 shillings. Bob is a slang word for a shilling (old money) Hope this helps.

You are quite right, mamyalynne, mally was first in (by 3 mins!).
But I'd still like to stump DK! (fat chance, eh DK?)
I take your point jackdaw, and I think your version is actually better!
Thank you all for your comments - they are a great help in terms of real, helpful feedback
Kind regards to all,
and have a lovely Christmas.
