I have always been under the impression that senting texts on Facebook Messenger was a free service. However, I have recently noticed that my android PAYG account is being charged each text I make. Can someone explain why this might be. Many thanks

FB Messenger can send a receive SMS messages as well as FB PMs. Go to settings in Messenger and make sure that SMS is not enabled.

I think its only free when you use an iphone.
You’ll pay a data fee if you’re not connected to WiFi.
turn off data on your phone, and only use wifi if your sending or downloading data, normal calls and texts are not effected, if your on payg then you save money and not have to keep topping up.
I've never paid.

Hi rockyracoon, my phone is set to Wi-Fi only. Consequently not data charge.

Then there should be no charge for messaging. Are you sure you are actually on Facebook Messenger and not text?

To The Chair and all others who have been kind enough to answer. The problem has now been solved by making Facebook messenger my default setting. Many thanks for all your help.
