my mum's wierd teacher

My mother told me that she was once explaining a mistake to a teacher when she was at school, and she started with 'i'm sorry sir, but I thought- at which point he interupted her by coming out with 'well you know what thought did? it followed a dustcart because he thought it was a wedding' I was just wondering if anyonelse had ever had this expression

My mum used to say " he thought he'd hanged himself but he hadn't".

and my mum used to say "he thought he's shot his foot off but he hadn't". And if I ever started a sentence with "if", she would say "if my auntie had balls she would have been my uncle".

and there's also "if ifs and ands were pots and pans, there would be no need for tinkers"!

I always had the expression "you know what thought did? It only thought it did" quoted at me

Parents, parent figures and teachers in 'my day' used to say: 'You know what thought did? He stuck a feather in the ground and thought it would grow a hen' (chickens are called hens in Scotland).
