15 across Present soldier with newspaper . answer ought to be gift, right? but this does not fit with down clues 1. fish i snared at sea answer sardine annd 2.grim rust on a neglected sportscar answer gran turismo giving i-t- for 15a. ??? similarly, 44a ought to be aide( assistant in russia identified) but 30d answer is railroad car and41d answer is redhead giving -a-d...??
I must be doing something wrong. can anyone help?

Discussed this yesterday; it looks like the setter has messed the grid up and 'gift' won't fit the given lights.

I E-mailed the editor, pointing out the errors and suggesting that they produce a Jumbo style version in the next edition to compensate the readers for this shambles. I did not even receive the courtesy of a reply. The latest edition arrived yesterday. There was no mention of the mistake. Do they not care any more or are they so assured of their readership that it is not important to apologise?

Further to the above, I (slightly) retract previous statement. There IS an apology but it is printed in the smallest font that they could find and it is tucked away under the solution to a previous crossword.
