I have installed a new battery in my crossword solver but pressing RESTART doesn't restore the functions. The function panel comes up with CONTRAST but that's all I can make it do. Can anybody offer any suggestions?

Have you tried a re-boot?

Thank you, Donny. This link says that after adjusting contrast to press ENTER and the apparatus goes to SPELLCHECKER mode. But it just says on CONTRAST.

Now then, Danny, that's a bit technical! What do I do to reboot?
Close down your computer and then start it again.
Question Author
It's not the computer. It's a little box that I call my word machine!
Most of these have a small hole somewhere - if that's the case, turn the box on, insert the end of a paper clip (usually, or whatever will fit) & hold until the screen refreshes with its default opening.
Sorry - I should've added that if you have the ability to save any "settings" on it, that ^ will clear them all.
Donny's link also shows it says if it doesn't work after battery change press RESET as LiK describes and shows the reset button to be on the bottom left of the panel
There should be a 'Reset' button on the front - bottom left I think.
Ah - naturally, I didn't check Donny's link first! The "Reset" button isn't as hidden as some I've seen :-)

Thank you Lie-in-King. That doesn't work. No matter how long I press in the little hole, the screen doesn't refresh. When I stop pressing, it just comes up again with CONTRAST.
Open Donny's link in post 1 above - scroll down to Page 13 (right-hand side) "Contrast Adjustment" - you need to press "Enter" once you've finished adjusting the contrast, that should take you to "Spellchecker" mode.
Apologies, am having a bad day here! I see you've already tried that...
Ok - in case you replaced the batteries without turning it off first - do it in reverse. Turn it off now, remove the batteries, then replace them, turn it on & try "Reset" again...
...followed by setting "Contrast" & pressing "Enter". Fingers crossed...
Question Author
Thank you Lie-in-King. I took the battery out, replaced it and this time there was no response in the panel. I think it's time to give up and buy a new one.
